Hayor Learning Center

About Hayor Learning Center

Hayor Learning Center (HLC) is a charitable organization based in Abokobi, a suburb of Accra Ghana. HLC was created to support the less privileged children within the community, especially children who are living on the streets of Ghana, selling candies, apples, dog chains and ice water. The HLC offers free learning opportunities through basic reading, writing, educational field trips, computer technology, and cultural education. Because we believe that every child can learn when provided opportunity and that we also must do our part to provide a safe available environment where that opportunity can take place. Within each child, education will promote courage, individuality and pride; it will mean opportunities to build better lives and social skills that ultimately lead to improved self-esteem, independence, confidence and inclusion. At Hayor Learning Center, mutual respect exists and helps to further heighten the awareness that these less privileged children no longer need to feel isolated or "different"

Community Involvement

In Ghanaian culture, the responsibility of raising children extends beyond the role of parents. The surrounding community assists in the education, nourishment, protection and entertainment of the child. No child is exclusively the responsibility of one parent or family, the children are "ours" to be nurtured and loved by all. Therefore, our expectations of children are equal and of the highest form. Despite hardships, hunger, poverty or abandonment, we should expect that each child be given the opportunity to overcome their deficiencies through careful return of that which they lack. The surrounding community should be there to provide for the child that which they don't have. In our Ghanaian society, there are scores of children trading on streets, whose needs are not met and are likely to be lost in a haze of obscurity. Many of these children are under-privileged. Cultural education aimed specifically at children of Ghana, is an influential and positive means of imparting to our youth the core values and self-assurance necessary to succeed in our society. Cultural education inspires confidence, self-esteem, and establishes identity through upholding the values of positive role models. By becoming involved in productive, adult mentored, traditionally inspired group activity, children will be encouraged to meet expectations and challenges on both a physical and mental level. Respect for self and others, their heritage and history, in addition to their own personal contribution to the evolving legacy, will be among these children's triumphs as students and members of the Hayor Learning center. Most importantly, involvement in this endeavor will offer the children a sense of responsibility, social code, moral behavior of justness and pride in achieving objectives. The study of basic learning, and cultural studies, promotes individuality as well as team spirit. Performing for peers gives children courage and healthy self-possession. These qualities are essential to succeed in life and we should uphold the expectation for each individual that they are indeed attainable. This program can help reaffirm that faith.
